The Chartreux Cat

Chartreux Breed Profile

The Chartreux breed is said, by some, to have originated in France from the remote monastery of La Grande Chartreus. The Monks required working cats to keep the vermin population under control and, due to the remote location, the cats interbred to produce an all blue shorthaired variety. Legend has it the cats are descendants of Syrian mountain cats brought back to France by crusaders in the 13th century.

It's more commonly accepted however that the cats took their name from an 18th century Spanish wool called pile de Chartreux. The debate continues...

The Chartreux is a large breed with a dense, blue/grey double coat, and gold or copper eyes. Despite it's massive size the Chartreux is a quiet, sometimes mute, cat that's gentle, intelligent and playful and have been known to play fetch with their owner. They tend to bond strongly with one person in the household though are affectionate to all.
